Obligatory Record Of The Day! Melted Toys - Observations

Single review by KevW

Summer doesn't really get boring (as long as the weather stays fine at least), but constantly talking about it does. The trouble is, that there are bands like Melted Toys out there, and Melted Toys are from San Francisco where you get what would feel to us Brits like a perpetual summer, and I suppose those conditions are conducive to making songs like 'Observations'. With their debut album out next week, this single is part of that climate bottled, and then sold to you in musical form as a taster of the sunshine pop that's to come. As a band who mix indie sounds with a hint of electronica on occasion, this is perhaps a little more regular than some of their songs, but it's an absolute cracker.

This track is brought to you by hazy pastel colours and soft, drifting vocals. It merges dreampop with a little sunkissed psychedelia and the pleasant jangle of guitar, all padded out with gentle washes of sound and a straightforward ticking beat. It's musical bliss that's built for those days where the sun is high in the sky and time seems to go on forever. If 'Observations' is an indication of the album as a whole then you have your summer soundtrack sorted and ready to go. The cliches and uses of obvious metaphors used to describe this may be old and tired, but the actual music is simply timeless.
