Obligatory Record Of The Day! Darlia - Pandemonium

Single review by KevW

Hype: it's a four-letter word, and one that most new bands crave, hoping for the press and public to hail them as the next big things they deserve to become. Then, when the much sought after attention comes along, it can be an albatross around your neck, leaving you forever trying to live up to the expectations that overexcited journalists, DJs and bloggers have heaped upon you, determined to be the first to play your music and cement their own position as tastemakers. Blackpool trio Darlia know a thing or two about hype. Since late last year everyone from NME to The Guardian to The BBC have declared them to be a group who many indie/alt-rock fans would fall for in a big way (including us).

Grungy sounds have been on the comeback trail for a while now, so it's an opportune moment for Darlia to launch themselves and reap the benefits. But have they lived up to the potential bestowed upon them? Coverage, praise and fanbase certainly suggest they're on the right track, and their singles have garnered attention. The latest, 'Dear Diary', shows you why; it's a grunge-influenced indie-rock number with more of a mainstream feel than anything they've released so far. With its big chorus it could serve them well. Flip it over though (if you've bought the 7" that is), and you'll find something even more rewarding. 'Pandemonium' might not have the ever so slight arena-rock leanings of the A-side, but as a scuzzy, tuneful, alternative guitar track, this one really hits the spot. You could argue that either track could have been the lead, but due to its edgier sound and constant droning buzz, it's this one that we're giving our seal of approval to.
